Independence Square — Mustaqillik Maydoni — is the vast ceremonial plaza of Tashkent, laid out with fountains, the Independence Monument crowned by a golden globe and the white Ezgulik (Good and Noble) Arch. It stands beside the government quarter and the Alisher Navoiy park. The metro station of the same name, on the Chilonzor Line, opens onto the square; in the Soviet era it was called Lenin Square.
